Rules

What can't go in a dumpster in Florida (and what to do instead)

Photo — paint cans and tires

The prohibited list causes more anxiety than it should. It is shorter than people fear, and every banned item has a legal, usually free, local disposal option.

The hard no list

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint, solvents, tires, car batteries, and anything with refrigerant (fridges, AC units) unless certified drained. Medical waste, never. These are landfill rules, not our rules — a flagged load costs everyone.

The easy fixes

Lee County household chemical waste sites take paint and chemicals free. Dry paint cans out with kitty litter and they become regular trash. Tire shops take old tires for a small fee. And we can handle fridges — just tell dispatch so we route a certified truck.

When in doubt, ask

Dispatch answers "can I throw this away?" questions all day, no judgment. One text with a photo saves a contaminated-load fee — and we would always rather tell you before than bill you after.
